Solar panels stand at the Welspun Energy solar power plant in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, India. One sector in particular — electrical power transmission — will see $270 billion in financial benefits, according to Goldman Sachs. While utilities like the Power Grid Corporation of India may be perceived as unsexy, compared to growth stocks like Tesla, India plans to promote renewable energy without the taxpayer spending a single rupee. The country has added about 70 gigawatts of solar power capacity over the past decade without piling on further costs by simply maximizing the grid's usage. Currently, state governments in India levy surcharges and taxes on every unit of carbon-intensive energy transmitted through the grid.

A coalition of U.S. solar manufacturers petitioned the federal government on Wednesday to impose tariffs on imports from four Southeast Asian nations, alleging that the countries are flooding the U.S. market with cheap products that threaten the domestic industry. The other six parties to the petition are Convalt Energy, Meyer Burger, Mission Solar, Qcells, REC Silicon and Swift Solar. They are requesting that the Commerce Department impose tariffs on solar cell imports from the four countries as a remedy. "This case is bad news for clean energy jobs and American solar manufacturing," Array CEO Kevin Hostetler said in a statement Wednesday. The ITC and Commerce Department investigations will take about 12 months to conclude, Brightbill said.

In late March, after two years of withering attacks on Ukraine, Russia knocked out half of Ukraine’s power supply. Up to that point, Russia’s missiles and kamikaze drones had mostly targeted the Ukrainian substations that push electricity from power plants to consumers. But the global community must now draw bright lines for combatants in future conflicts — and strengthen the hand of future prosecutors — by codifying specific protections for power grids. The international community already attempts to do that for select infrastructure, including hospitals, dams and nuclear power plants, via the Geneva Conventions. It’s time to add power grids to that privileged roster.

Under California rules, Democrats and Republicans appear on the same primary ballot and the two candidates with the most votes advance to the general election, regardless of political party. Come November, the seat is expected to stay in Democratic hands in a state where Republicans haven’t won a U.S. Senate election since 1988. Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler, a longtime Democratic organizer, to fulfill Feinstein's term, and Butler chose not to seek election to the seat. In 2016 and 2018, GOP Senate candidates performed so poorly that two Democrats appeared on the November ballot. Don’t get sick from salmonella this holiday season

Martin Wiedmann: Salmonella is a microorganism that is very small. You might ingest salmonella 100 times, and 99% of the time you are fine, but then one time you get sick. Wiedmann: Raw cookie dough represents a risk for salmonella, even if you have eaten raw cookie dough in the past without getting sick. Best ways to avoid getting infected with salmonellaTo limit your chances of salmonella infection, cook raw meat and poultry properly. If a spatula touches raw meat on a grill for example, that spatula can also be a source of salmonella.

REUTERS/David Swanson/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 24 (Reuters) - Canceled offshore wind projects, imperiled solar factories, fading demand for electric vehicles. A year after passage of the largest climate change legislation in U.S. history, meant to touch off a boom in American clean energy development, economic realities are fraying President Joe Biden’s agenda. Clean energy experts interviewed by Reuters say the mounting setbacks will make the United States' ambitious targets to decarbonize by mid-century even harder to reach. Solar energy facilities account for two thirds of those delays due in part to U.S. import restrictions. "These are the normal ups and downs of clean energy development and deployment," Reicher said.

Solar stocks could rebound in the second half of 2024 after taking a beating this year, though the industry's recovery depends largely on whether the Federal Reserve raises interest rates again. The rally comes as the residential solar industry looks toward the end of a rough year, with demand softening significantly as repeated rate hikes made installations unattractive for consumers. "The big headwind is interest rates," said Julien Dumoulin-Smith, a stock analyst who covers clean energy for Bank of America. Inventory problem The residential solar companies misread the market this year after a record 2022. The residential solar stocks will probably be broadly revisited on the buyside sometime around the spring of 2024, Blanchard said, though this also depends on what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates.

Nov 2 (Reuters) - Air pollution, a global scourge that kills millions of people a year, is shielding us from the full force of the sun. "It's this Catch-22," said Patricia Quinn, an atmospheric chemist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), speaking about cleaning up sulphur pollution globally. "If you implement technologies to reduce air pollution, this will accelerate – very significantly – global warming in the short term." The Chinese and Indian environment ministries didn't immediately respond to requests for comment on the effects of pollution unmasking. As the implications of the pollution unmasking become more apparent, experts are casting around for methods to counter the associated warming.

There could be more pain ahead for clean technology stocks — but there may be a buying opportunity for long-term investors, according to JPMorgan. Analyst Bill Peterson said clean technology stocks have seen sentiment become even more challenged following the second-quarter earnings cycle, as investors struggle to digest sliding demand trends, inflation and project delays. Clean technology stocks have fallen about 22% since 2023 began by JPMorgan's calculations, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite has climbed around 21%. "Despite several positive catalysts on the horizon, we think the Clean Tech universe will likely see sentiment worsen before it gets better," Peterson told clients on Friday. However, the average analyst polled by LSEG has a buy rating with an expected upside of nearly 320%.

Time is ripe for another push on carbon pricing
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +8 min
Other technologies, such as green hydrogen and carbon capture, are still a long way from maturity. Around 50 countries have some form of carbon price, double the number 10 years ago, and another 23 countries are planning to introduce one. The snag is that China’s carbon price is low and the United States doesn’t have a federal levy. Others argue that governments should combine carbon pricing with financial support for the most vulnerable and targeted subsidies for fledgling technologies. To hit climate targets, the carbon price would need to be $135 a tonne in advanced economies and $45 a tonne in large emerging ones by 2030.

That adds to tech-related tensions between the West and China, which is one of Europe’s biggest trading partners and the world’s biggest auto market. Chinese EV makers are drawn to Europe because auto import tariffs are just 10% versus 27.5% in the U.S., independent auto analyst Matthias Schmidt said. MG — owned by SAIC Motor, China’s biggest automaker — is the largest Chinese EV player in Europe. One reason Chinese companies can offer high-quality cars at affordable prices stems from the rules to enter the Chinese market. Oct 13 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden will announce in Philadelphia on Friday the recipients of $7 billion in federal grants for the development of regional hydrogen hubs, advancing a key part of his administration's broader plan to decarbonize the U.S. economy. "The regional hydrogen hubs will kickstart a national network of clean hydrogen production, consumers and the connected infrastructure necessary, while supporting the production, storage and delivery and end use of clean hydrogen,” a senior administration official said. The hubs selected will serve the mid-Atlantic, Appalachian, Midwest, Minnesota and Plains states, the Gulf Coast, Pacific Northwest and California. The grants are expected to leverage over $40 billion in private investment, generate tens of thousands of jobs and create a national hydrogen economy. Most of the selected hubs include the use of natural gas to power hydrogen production, which administration officials said would need to install carbon capture technology to qualify.
